Rural- Local Self Government: The local government bodies like the Panchayati Raj System have a particular structure. The chapter explains the basic structure and the functional working of the system. Children should be able to appreciate and initiate the responsibilities of the small local governing authorities of India. The key topics to be focussed on include the meaning of the Local- Self Government, Panchayati Raj System, Gram Sabha - Gram Panchayat, Nyaya Panchayat, Block Samiti (functions), and Zila Parishads.
Syllabus of Civics Class 6 - Unit 2
Urban- Local Self Government: This chapter focuses on the structure and functions of the Municipal Corporation. Hence, it aims to give the students a better understanding of the small and big cities. Students become aware of their duties as proactive citizens. The key features of the chapter include - definition of the term Metropolitan, major cities like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Chennai, Municipal Corporations, two functions of services such as water supply, public health sanitation, education, lighting, security and public works and maternity and child welfare.

Objectives of Unit 1
Rural Local Self Government should be taught in such a way so that it brings about an interest in the children. Students should take it as their moral responsibility to understand and support the working of the smaller and local bodies of the government.
Objectives of Unit 2
Children will be able to define constitutional terms like "metropolitan" in a simplified way. The theme focuses on the thorough explanation of the working of the Urban Self Government. Children can identify all the metropolitan cities of the country on the map. The topics of local problems like sewage, traffic jam, pollution, cleanliness in the urban localities can be distributed among the students for further research such that they come up with their solutions for these public issues.
